Creating a “Sensory Safe” Evacuation Plan – Live Webinar

As the risk of natural disasters continues to rise and threaten the well-being of all people, individuals with Sensory Processing Disorders face specific challenges that may impede their ability to evacuate to safety. This course provides clinicians with an in-depth look at these challenges and the tools needed to help clients develop a “Sensory-Safe” evacuation plan.

Kathryn Hamlin-Pacheco, M.S., OTR/L, is an occupational therapist, former teacher, author, and founder of the Brain Executive Program. She has combined her clinical knowledge with her experience as an educator to create this program aimed at empowering children and their families through everyday neuroscience to be the power-holders and change-makers in their own lives. Her book, How to Be a Brain Executive: And Get Sensory Sharp! was a top Amazon release in two categories. Kathryn graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, where she also worked with the Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program to pursue her desire to be an advocate and leader in pediatric healthcare. She developed the Sensory Safe Evacuation Planner and has shared it internationally at conferences as well as written about it for OT Practice Magazine and Autism Parenting Magazine. She enjoys life with her husband, Justin, and their daughter, Mackenzie, wherever the military sends them.

Learning Outcomes

  • After this course, participants will be able to differentiate between the experience of a natural disaster from the perspective of a person with and without a disability.
  • After this course, participants will be able to analyze potential challenges that a person with sensory processing dysfunction/disorder might encounter during an evacuation.
  • After this course, participants will be able to identify an evacuation plan that meets the sensory needs of an individual with sensory processing disorder/dysfunction.
