Supporting Self-Regulation Development in Young Children – Webinar
November 2, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm MST
Childhood development is a dynamic process that starts in-utero with neurological connections influenced by internal and external factors to support growth. Self-regulation skills are a cornerstone of development that help children succeed when they have a sense of control and confidence through predictable routines and communicated expectations. Co- regulation involves a complex process of observing subtle cues in children, understanding a child’s body language and responding to the child’s needs in a prompt and consistent manner with intentional and focused interactions. The early years are a critical period where the brain has the ability to change, relearn and strengthen important connections when a child is engaged in rich experiences and interactions. Strategies will be covered to provide children with the building blocks they need for a strong foundation of self- regulation skills and executive function to foster independence, ability to cope and good decision-making skills. Self-regulation skills are imperative for development of emotional intelligence, academic achievement, positive social relationships and life-long transitions.
This course will review how to integrate evidence-based strategies into daily activities to encourage positive interactions in a variety of environments based on child’s unique needs. As providers, we need to respect family priorities with goal development and plan of care, with attention to cultural sensitivity and the impact of adverse childhood experiences. Coaching strategies will be reviewed to help empower families to support self-regulation skills throughout the early years.
