School-Age Speech and Language Milestones – Webinar

March 18 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm MST

As speech-language pathologists, we’re experts when it comes to speech, language, and communication milestones. So, it stands to reason that we can more easily notice aspects of atypical development as related to a child’s communication skills. In most school-based settings, speech-language pathologists rely on teachers, special educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, etc. to refer and monitor children who exhibit a suspected communication delay or disorder. Each child develops uniquely and may reach certain milestones earlier or later than others, and a child may not reach each milestone until the end of a given age range.

The developmental milestones and “red flags” examined in this course will help you to familiarize other professionals with what they can expect from children in terms of typical development of various communication skills. As a result, this will aid other professionals in knowing when to seek a screening and/or speech-language pathology services. These developmental milestones are not a screening or diagnostic tool. They are meant to be used to provide information to other professionals in seeking speech- language services or making an appropriate referral. Strategies for sharing this information with other school-based professionals will be discussed. In addition, when and whereto refer a student following a speech-language screening will also be presented.

The content of this program is germane to children, students and clients ages 5-18 years old.
