Addressing Dysphagia With Pulmonary Dysfunction (Webinar)

August 5 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm MST

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is highly prevalent among patients with chronic respiratory diseases, and may also cause subsequent respiratory complications, such as respiratory infections and pneumonia. Other contributory factors include impaired breath-swallow coordination, muscle dysfunction, reduced sensitivity, higher risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and effects of commonly prescribed medications and lethargy.

This course shares research-based evidence and practical applications to best understand and treat clients who have dysphagia, secondary to pulmonary dysfunctions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Content will initially include the risks and common triggers for dysphagia as a result of COPD and other pulmonary diseases, as well as the common side effects of medications often prescribed for pulmonary disease, which may also affect swallowing and cognitive functions. Targeted strategies will be shared for prevention and treatment of dysphagia for this population, focusing on reducing symptoms, slowing disease progression, improving quality of life, and minimizing exacerbations will then be discussed. Participants will learn key assessment factors, sample treatment goals, risks and safety precautions related to diet and thickened liquids, breathing strategies, and review a detailed chart of evidence-based intervention strategies with the supporting rationale for each.

Target AudienceOccupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Speech-Language Pathologists
