DESCRIPTION:Course Description\nThe shoulder is an area that is highly susceptible to tendon-related pain and injury.  Given the complexity of tendon overlay at this area and high level of mobility in the shoulder complex\, tendinopathy can be a difficult condition to manage conservatively.  The rotator cuff and biceps tendons are common sources of pain generation.  Characterized by painful mechanical loading of an involved tendon\, tendinopathy is a common clinical condition associated with significant limitations in daily activities.  Recent research has improved the understanding and management of tendinopathy; however\, clinical management of this condition continues to be variable in both type and theory of intervention.  Current standard of therapy practice has yet to leverage the latest literature for effective treatment of tendinopathy. \nProgressive mechanical loading has been found to be an effective management strategy\, but the research is variable between the upper and lower extremities.  Different modes of strength training\, including isometric\, isotonic\, isolated eccentric\, and isokinetic\, can be used to control pain\, improve motor control\, and enhance function in pathological tissue. \nTendinopathy of the upper extremities can have profound negative effects on an individual’s ability to participate in and return to their previous level of functional activities.  This presentation will highlight current available evidence related to shoulder tendinopathy and provide simple\, effective\, and easy-to-implement clinical management strategies for pain\, progression of functional activities\, and treatment of the entire kinetic chain.  The emphasis of this course will be on exercise and manual therapy strategies. \nCourse Objectives\nAt the end of this course\, the participant will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the most current research related to upper and lower extremity tendinopathy\nDescribe examination components in the evaluation of tendinopathy\nUtilize strategies for pain management and treatment of the entire kinetic chain.\nDevelop a rehabilitation program that incorporates guidelines for tissue loading progression and return to activity

DESCRIPTION:You will learn to:\n\n\n\nIdentify different types of feeding tubes\, including: a nasogastric tube (NG tube)\, a gastrostomy tube (G-Tube)\, gastro-jejunal tube (G-J Tube)\, and a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube.\nImplement strategies to support the feeding relationship between parents and tube-fed children\nIdentify red flags that may indicate a need for changes in tube-feeding routines (including a child’s distress with feeding)\nIdentify when a child demonstrates readiness to transition off of a feeding tube.\nUnderstand the importance of internal motivation and factors that contribute to a child’s development of appetite\nUse tube feedings to help a child learn to eat orally\nIncorporate information from growth charts into treatment planning\nCollaborate with a child’s family and medical team in order to problem-solve tube feeding challenges\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCourse Description\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Permission is a trust-based approach to pediatric feeding intervention. This three-day (16.5 hours) long workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of feeding tubes using the Get Permission framework. Content will include an introduction to the mechanics of feeding tubes\, why a child may receive a feeding tube\, and how feeding tubes can be used to support a child’s growth. There will be a special emphasis on helping course participants learn how feeding tubes can be used to support the relationship between parents and their children. Participants will learn how feeding tubes can be used to promote emotional well-being of parents and support a child’s mealtime participation. A significant portion of the course will be devoted to helping participants develop clinical reasoning skills to identify when a child may be ready to transition off of a feeding tube and begin oral eating. Additional topics will include: The benefits of a homemade blended diet\, strategic use of hunger\, oral-motor skill acquisition\, and application of Get Permission strategies for treatment success. Video examples and real-life case studies will be used to help participants apply Get Permission principles to their own practice. He also finds much reward in exploring ways to best implement assistive technology with children who have autism. \nJohn graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders. He received his master’s degree in Communicative Disorders from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1992. After graduation\, he worked at Arkansas Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center\, specializing in assistive technology. He has also owned a pediatric therapy clinic and after-school care for children with disabilities.
