SUMMARY:Functional Movement Disorder - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Many of us “grew up” in the therapy world having a basic understanding of conversion disorder and have worked with patients where it feels obvious to us that the patient’s movement problems are not consistent with the diagnosis they have been given. It may feel like they are “faking it”. These patients are often frustrating and difficult to treat with positive outcomes\, leading to therapist burnout. We often don’t have the tools we need to be effective. Emerging research and an increase in appropriate diagnoses of functional movement disorder (FMD) has helped us identify and treat this very real diagnosis. Join us to fill your toolbox with diagnosis and treatment techniques that will allow you to get very real and positive outcomes with this challenging patient population. \nThis course will enhance your differential diagnosis skills around FMD and provide you with practical treatment constructs and ideas that you can put into your patient care the next day. This course includes case studies and video examples to promote learning. After taking this course you will be able to provide your patient population with FMD treatment that will help them get better faster and stay better without frustration and burnout on your end. \nHighlights\n\nPractical treatment approaches and model of treatment delivery you can use the next day with all neurological patients\nEffective\, evidence-based interventions for this population\nCase studies with examples of task-specific functions and return to ADLs\nPatient factors that arise when treating this population that include pain\, cognition\, sleep\, and stress

SUMMARY:Utilizing Neuroplasticity to Improve Pediatric Motor Learning - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Researchers estimate that 49 million\, or 15% of Americans are formally diagnosed with some type of delay annually and are seeing therapists with increasingly complex issues. In the fast-paced systems we operate within\, it is imperative that a clinician be able to prioritize treatments for optimal outcomes. In addition\, a large body of research is emerging that promotes using a multi-sensory approach to modulate the nervous system. This course combines the latest concepts of motor learning with manual therapy and modalities to promote change at the cellular level. The essential role of functional nutrition/hydration and its impact on reducing chronic health conditions in pediatric patients will be explored. Researchers also estimate that 30 million children are dehydrated in the US and is the leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide\, resulting in over 300 deaths annually. Relevant parental instructional strategies to increase follow through of recommendations will be discussed to improve upon practice within the context of daily life. Promoting a holistic treatment approach that encourages healing from the inside out is a must for every relevant healthcare professional! \nThis hands-on\, relevant course will start with a review of neuroanatomy and physiology\, including focused attention to the integumentary system\, or the “diffuse brain\,” as a key component of the nervous system. Participants will be guided through a user-friendly framework to screen across body structures and systems. The screen directs clinicians through a multisystem assessment\, recommended by the APTA\,resulting in the ability to identify the primary physiology/system(s) impacting function. Therapists will use that information to guide interventions/stimulus options to promote improved\, meaningful participation in life activities. Participants will engage in labs to exercise the use of assessment and somatic cues to rewire the body-brain connection. You will leave knowing how to prioritize and strategically employ interventions across body systems to improve patient outcomes! \nHighlights\n\nConfidently implement evaluation skills using an effective framework you can put into practice immediately\nPractice powerful tests and measures to assess for underlying conditions and co-morbidities of the integumentary\, postural\, sensory\, and respiratory systems\nPractical treatment strategies to incorporate current principles of motor learning through a multisensory\, dynamic systems approach to promote functional change\nEffective\, evidence-based parent involvement strategies to increase caregiver engagement and follow through of therapist recommendations\nHands-on labs to engage in postural and scar assessment\, joint mobilizations\, and sensory strategies\nEngage in functional nutritional education for clients for daily intake as well as pre/post op recommendations to promote healing from within

SUMMARY:Physical Therapy Implications for Pediatric Orthopedic Disorders of Childhood - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\nOrthopedic physical therapy involves the practice of correcting functional impairments of the entire musculoskeletal system. Physical therapists & Physical therapist assistants who specialize in this discipline provide services that help to restore function\, improve mobility\, and relieve pain while promoting overall health and fitness. Pediatric orthopedic physical therapy extends this discipline to the developmental care of children by considering their future growth. Pediatric PTs & PTAs are trained to recognize\, identify\, and treat a large variety of orthopedic complications and injuries. By restoring function while increasing mobility\, pediatric orthopedic physical therapy helps the pediatric patient reach their maximum potential for independent function. The scope of pediatric orthopedics ranges from congenital anomalies to injuries in the older adolescent. \nIn this course\, the normal growth and development of the pediatric musculoskeletal system will be reviewed. This will include a discussion of Spranger’s classification of disorders of morphogenesis\, as well as provide a review of the components of a typical pediatric physical therapy musculoskeletal examination. Course participants will examine the characteristics and manifestations of various prenatal and postnatal pediatric orthopedic conditions and describe PT interventions relevant to the pediatric population. Finally\, course participants will examine common pediatric sports injuries\, including concussion management\, and considerations for the young athlete. \nCourse Objectives\nAt the end of this course\, the participant will be able to: \n\nReview normal growth and development of a child’s musculoskeletal system.\nDescribe Spranger’s classification of Disorders of Morphogenesis.\nReview the components of a typical pediatric musculoskeletal examination.\nDiscuss the characteristics and manifestations of various prenatal pediatric orthopedic conditions.\nDiscuss the characteristics and manifestations of various postnatal pediatric orthopedic conditions.\nDescribe physical therapy interventions for orthopedic disorders related to the pediatric population.\nDescribe common pediatric sports injuries and considerations for the young athlete.

SUMMARY:Food Allergies and Pediatric Feeding Therapy - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) is defined as impaired oral intake that is not age-appropriate and is associated with medical\, nutritional\, feeding skill\, and/or psycho social dysfunction. Food allergy is a complex immune disorder caused by specific genetic variants in combination with environmental and nutritional exposures\, that falls under the medical domain of PFD and can directly impact the nutritional\, feeding skill\, and psycho social domains of PFD. It is estimated that 33 million Americans have food allergies. 1 in 13 children have food allergies and an estimated 40% of those children have experienced a severe reaction.Professionals working with children with PFD must be up to date on the current recommendations on the introduction of solids (for those with and without familial history of food allergy)\, have a foundational knowledge of the various types and clinical signs and how food allergies can directly impact oral motor development\, feeding skill acquisition\, and nutrition. Speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists working with children with PFD are in a unique position to help mitigate the negative impacts that food allergies can have and increase the quality of life of both the child and the whole family unit. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients birth – 10 years. \nHighlights\n\nThe most current research on food allergies and the implications of introducing solids and advancing oral motor skills\nThe difference between Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and Non-IgE mediated allergies\nSigns and symptoms of reactivity in children when introducing solids\nPractical intervention strategies for creatively advancing a child’s oral motor skills with limited safe foods.
