SUMMARY:The Pediatric Diabetic Patient - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The number of children diagnosed with type 1 (T1) diabetes is on a steep rise in numbers (Gale\, 2002). T1 diabetes is the number one diagnosed chronic condition for children with an estimated 50 million children diagnosed in the United States by 2050 (Center for Disease Control\, 2020 & Russell\, et al.\, 2020). Right now\, approximately one out of every 400 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes\, which makes it a fairly common disease. The other main form of diabetes\, type 2\, is also becoming more common in children\, and is likely related to increased body weight. (Osinpoff\, 2022\, para 2). Children with T1 and type 2 (T2) diabetes are affected in participation and management of all pediatric occupations\, as well as health and wellness. Beyond the occupations impacted by diabetes; psychosocial well-being is a significant concern among youth with diabetes. It is common for youth with diabetes to struggle with depression\, eating disorders\, and reoccurring hyperglycemic episodes (Lah Tomulic\, et al.\, 2022). Diabetes is a condition that not only impacts the quality of life of the patient\, but also the parents and other family members. A positive family environment with communication and co-management of the condition is the best practice for positive outcomes and prognosis of diabetes (Blonde\, et al.\, 2022; Kearney\, et al.\, 2022; Trojanowksi\, et al.\, 2021). Rehabilitation professionals are key practitioners to help children diagnosed with diabetes and their families to holistically manage the condition and improve health and wellness through increased access and participation in daily occupations. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients ages 18 months-18 years old. \nHighlights\n\nImmediately improve your holistic assessment of all eight pediatric occupations and the impact of diabetes\nEffective evidence-based strategies for occupational engagement addressing quality of life outcomes through psychosocial and physical health and well-being for the pediatric patient with diabetes

SUMMARY:Navigating Behavior and Communication in Pediatric Therapy - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:As therapists\, we are charged with the expectation to improve our client’s ability to complete a task\, master a skill\, or decrease the presentation of an unwanted behavior. Throughout the ever-evolving world of pediatric therapy interventions\, therapists are faced with the challenges of managing behaviors throughout a session. These behaviors can be a combination of age-appropriate behaviors such as refusal behaviors or difficulty transitioning to non-preferred tasks\, but some behaviors can manifest due to a breakdown in communication\, frustration\, sensory concerns\, and inability to effectively communicate basic wants and needs\, among a myriad of other possibilities. \nThrough this course\, you will learn the difference between age-appropriate behaviors and other behaviors\, how to identify the link between communication and behavior\, how to use the ABCs of behavior to prevent negative behaviors and proactively support your client’s needs\, and how to incorporate behavioral techniques into your daily therapy sessions. Join us for a crash course in the interlocking connection between behavior and communication and learn how to better serve your current clients. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients ages 0- 10. \nHighlights\n\nAssess age-appropriate behaviors and those rooted in communication breakdown that impact the productivity of a therapeutic session\nInnovative strategies to target negative behaviors to increase success and obtain desired outcomes

SUMMARY:#7157 Releasing the Frozen Shoulder - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Shoulder pain is prevalent in between 2.4% and 26% of the population\, resulting in significant financial burden\, pain and loss of quality of life. According to the APTA’s Clinical Practice Guidelines\, mobilization and exercise are important components of shoulder pain management. Too often clinicians are ready to perform joint manipu-lation/mobilization with disregard for the soft tissue component of the stiff shoulder. Myofascial restrictions may limit shoulder mobility and function and must be addressed as part of a plan of care. When fascia becomes scarred from inflammation\, injury\, postural habits or disease\, its tension adversely impacts functional mobility and physical activity. Manual therapy may include myofascial work to release tension and pain and restore mobility and function. Identify fascial restrictions using motion testing and palpation. Apply specific manual and movement interventions to address mobility deficits\, improve circulation\, and decrease pain in people presenting with shoulder pain and mobility deficits to achieve improved functional outcomes. \n  \nInstructor: Theresa A. SUMMARY:Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:According to recent data published in Gastrointestinal Disorders\, feeding disorders occur in up to 45% of the general pediatric population and up to 80% of children with developmental disabilities and complex medical conditions. The etiology of these disorders is often as varied as the clinical experiences and knowledge of the professionals who are providing treatment. Therefore\, when working with children who are experiencing feeding and swallowing challenges\, it is essential to have an understanding and knowledge of their medical history\, etiology of the disorder\, prior and current nutritional intake\, sensory and behavioral responses\, and caregiver(s’) involvement to provide the most comprehensive assessments and treatment plans. \nThis course will discuss key deficits and risk factors that need to be identified to develop a multidisciplinary plan of care based on the principle of specificity. Sensory and motor aspects of feeding and swallowing will also be addressed in addition to other barriers to successful oral intake. Guidelines for each of these areas within a developmental framework will be presented as well and evidence-based practice patterns will be discussed to develop effective treatment protocols and to identify ongoing assessment needs. Ethical and legal considerations regarding swallowing safety\, oral feedings\, and parent/caregiver choices will also be addressed collaboratively. \nHighlights\n\nDevelop a comprehensive protocol for identifying feeding and swallowing dysfunction and risk factors in pediatric clients\nIntegrate a multidisciplinary team approach in a PT/OT/SLP practice for the treatment of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders

SUMMARY:Dyslexia and Other Language Disorders - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:An alarming number of children (approximately 67% of children nationwide and more than 80% of those from low socioeconomic backgrounds) are unable to read proficiently by the end of third grade (AECF\, 2010). Research demonstrates that students not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school (AEFC\, 2010\, Hernandez\, 2011). Extensive research based on the science of reading indicates that the effective instruction of reading and writing must include a language- based approach that is direct\, systematic\, explicit in content\, and includes a focus on the foundational skills of phonological and phonemic awareness\, vocabulary study\, and comprehension (NRP\, 2000). Children with written language disorders (difficulties with reading\, spelling\, and written expression) encounter significant barriers to educational access\, preventing them from successfully participating in academic activities and learning. \n  \nHighlights\n\nImmediately identify\, evaluate\, and plan treatment for those at risk for written language disorders\nExamine the role of the speech-language pathologist in the assessment and treatment of dyslexia and other written language disorders

SUMMARY:Impact of Visual Deficits on Motor and Cognitive Development in Infants and Toddlers - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:According to the Kaiser Family Foundation\, children spend up to seven hours a day in front of a screen. Such exposure to screen time has compromised their ability to participate in movement activities to encourage normal visual\, motor\, cognitive\, and social development. The subsequent complications can include difficulty with visual processing\, and motor and cognitive development that impact the child’s ability to learn. Screen time influence\, coupled with a need to confine children in equipment\, has further influenced how children learn. This session seeks to provide ways to identify infants and toddlers at risk for developing visual deficits that can later influence the child’s motor and cognitive development. Clinicians involved with at-risk children can potentially change a child’s developmental trajectory. \nThis course will highlight ways in which practitioners who work with infants and toddlers can use visual approaches to influence motor and cognitive development. Participants will gain an appreciation for the complexity of the child’s visual development and how this sense influences motor and cognitive skills. An initial review of the visual system\, risk factors\, and available assessments will be provided; followed by a demonstration of intervention strategies. Through interactive discussion and analysis of a case example\, participants will demonstrate practical ways to influence the visual system and provide supportive home programming to families\, caregivers\, or teachers. The participants will be able to return to their clinic\, school\, or home settings with the knowledge to support their client’s visual skill development. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients ages 0- 18. \nHighlights\n\nEvidence review from over 10 articles that highlight the alarming problem associated with visual and motor development due to environmental influences on young children and unfortunate later effects related to learning\nPractical ways to address visual\, motor\, and cognitive development\nInteract with a case to develop solutions and create opportunities for carry-over in the home or school settings\nEffective\, evidence-based interventions to address visual\, motor\, and cognitive deficits
