DESCRIPTION:The number of children diagnosed with type 1 (T1) diabetes is on a steep rise in numbers (Gale\, 2002). T1 diabetes is the number one diagnosed chronic condition for children with an estimated 50 million children diagnosed in the United States by 2050 (Center for Disease Control\, 2020 & Russell\, et al.\, 2020). Right now\, approximately one out of every 400 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes\, which makes it a fairly common disease. The other main form of diabetes\, type 2\, is also becoming more common in children\, and is likely related to increased body weight. (Osinpoff\, 2022\, para 2). Children with T1 and type 2 (T2) diabetes are affected in participation and management of all pediatric occupations\, as well as health and wellness. Beyond the occupations impacted by diabetes; psychosocial well-being is a significant concern among youth with diabetes. It is common for youth with diabetes to struggle with depression\, eating disorders\, and reoccurring hyperglycemic episodes (Lah Tomulic\, et al.\, 2022). Diabetes is a condition that not only impacts the quality of life of the patient\, but also the parents and other family members. A positive family environment with communication and co-management of the condition is the best practice for positive outcomes and prognosis of diabetes (Blonde\, et al.\, 2022; Kearney\, et al.\, 2022; Trojanowksi\, et al.\, 2021). DESCRIPTION:Shoulder pain is prevalent in between 2.4% and 26% of the population\, resulting in significant financial burden\, pain and loss of quality of life. According to the APTA’s Clinical Practice Guidelines\, mobilization and exercise are important components of shoulder pain management. Too often clinicians are ready to perform joint manipu-lation/mobilization with disregard for the soft tissue component of the stiff shoulder. Myofascial restrictions may limit shoulder mobility and function and must be addressed as part of a plan of care. When fascia becomes scarred from inflammation\, injury\, postural habits or disease\, its tension adversely impacts functional mobility and physical activity. Manual therapy may include myofascial work to release tension and pain and restore mobility and function. Identify fascial restrictions using motion testing and palpation. DESCRIPTION:According to recent data published in Gastrointestinal Disorders\, feeding disorders occur in up to 45% of the general pediatric population and up to 80% of children with developmental disabilities and complex medical conditions. The etiology of these disorders is often as varied as the clinical experiences and knowledge of the professionals who are providing treatment. Therefore\, when working with children who are experiencing feeding and swallowing challenges\, it is essential to have an understanding and knowledge of their medical history\, etiology of the disorder\, prior and current nutritional intake\, sensory and behavioral responses\, and caregiver(s’) involvement to provide the most comprehensive assessments and treatment plans. \nThis course will discuss key deficits and risk factors that need to be identified to develop a multidisciplinary plan of care based on the principle of specificity. Sensory and motor aspects of feeding and swallowing will also be addressed in addition to other barriers to successful oral intake. Guidelines for each of these areas within a developmental framework will be presented as well and evidence-based practice patterns will be discussed to develop effective treatment protocols and to identify ongoing assessment needs.
