SUMMARY:Traumatic Brain Injury - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury that can occur from a bump or blow to the head\, or when an object goes through the skull and enters the brain. Because the brain controls all that you do\, a TBI can cause many problems that can affect several aspects of day-to-day life. Much will depend on the severity of the injury and what part of the brain was injured. Regardless of the type and severity of the TBI\,damage to the brain occurs immediately at the time of injury. Later\, a person who has suffered a TBI may develop seizures or brain swelling. \nA TBI may cause one or more of the following problems. These problems can affect how a person functions in school\, at work\, and during everyday activities. The following will be addressed in regard to causes\, symptoms\, assessment\, and treatment: \n\nPhysical problems – fainting\, seizures\, headaches\, dizziness and vomiting\, problems with balance\, and muscle weakness.\nSensory problems – sensitivity to light\, sound\, and touch; hearing loss or ringing in the ears; changes in vision or double vision.\nBehavior changes – being more emotional or feeling anxious or angry; feeling depressed or experiencing mood swings.\nProblems with thinking skills – difficulty paying attention\, recalling information\, and learning new information; difficulty planning\, setting goals\, and problem- solving.\nSpeech and language problems – problems being understood because of weak speech muscles (dysarthria) or problems controlling speech muscles (apraxia); problems understanding what others say or what you read; problems finding the words to say.\nSocial communication issues – difficulty following conversational rules\, like taking turns and not interrupting; difficulty understanding nonverbal cues\, like when someone rolls their eyes.\nSwallowing problems – trouble chewing or coughing and choking when eating or drinking.\n\nHighlights\n\nDescribe the causes and symptoms of a traumatic brain injury and how these can affect aspects of diagnosis and treatment within your specific discipline\nApply knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic options when designing functional treatment plans for patients with a traumatic brain injury

DESCRIPTION:Smooth and coordinated motor skills are not only a product of strong motor planning but also of sensory integration to elicit a coordinated motor response (Martel\, et al.\, 2022). Motor planning deficits can be lifelong\, and it is common for children with other diagnoses to have delays in motor skills. Motor planning delays can present in a variety of patterns from general discoordination or specific motor deficits such as gross\, oral\, or fine motor delays. The rehabilitation specialist needs to be a detective and figure out why a joint is not moving and/or what is causing the pain. Shoulder elevation is one of the most complicated movements in the body.  The treatment of a stiff and painful should not reproduce the pain that the patient has come to physical therapy to get ride of. f we analysis the shoulder motions it is made up of moving parts all responsible for the functional movement patterns that the joint allows. There are three major moving parts of the shoulder\, the scapula\, humerus\, and the clavicle\, making up three moving joints. The glenohumeral (G-H) and the acromio-clavicular (AC) are synovial joints\, where as the scapula-thoracic (ST) is a sesamoid bone floating around the ribs.  We believe that restoring rotation of the glenohumeral joint\, acromio-clavicular and scapula thoracic articulation before elevation is the safest and most efficient methods of treating patients with stiff and painful shoulders. Forcing a shoulder joint that is painful and stiff into elevation is dangerous. \n  \nInstructor:Robert Donatelli\, Ph.D\, PT
