DESCRIPTION:Pediatric feeding and swallowing problems that effect infants and children may be complex and often involve a combination of factors including issues that can make eating painful or difficult. In order to successfully remediate feeding problems\, clinicians must understand how medical and nutritional issues can contribute to feeding disorders and use a comprehensive approach to intervention. The CAN-EAT Approach© is a 2-day workshop focusing on medical\, nutritional\, and therapeutic strategies for children with pediatric feeding disorders. \n  \nThis course will allow participants to describe how pediatric feeding disorders are defined in the literature\, what the contributing factors include\, and how this relates to clinical practice. Identify primary gastrointestinal issues (gastroesophageal reflux\, constipation\, motility disorders\, eosinophilic esophagitis\, and visceral hyperalgesia) during a feeding evaluation and explain how these issues affect a child’s feeding skill development and ability to progress. Participants will analyze a child’s oral motor function and apply the knowledge in treatment making recommendations for appropriate diet\, utensil use\, and development of a therapy plan for skill development. Identify signs and symptoms of pharyngeal dysphagia or risk for pharyngeal dysphagia in a child and make appropriate recommendations for further assessment or treatment. Analyze moderate and complex pediatric feeding cases identifying barriers to feeding progression and apply principles to prioritize treatment strategies and write appropriate goals. Describe and apply examples of therapeutic techniques to reduce gagging\, improve liquid and food acceptance\, improve chewing skill\, and wean from a feeding tube. \n  \nIn the CAN-EAT Approach© “CAN” stands for comfort and nutrition which come first. Day one will focus on strategies to build GI comfort and good growth as well as explore other medical issues that interfere with feeding progression. DESCRIPTION:Shoulder pain is prevalent in between 2.4% and 26% of the population\, resulting in significant financial burden\, pain and loss of quality of life. According to the APTA’s Clinical Practice Guidelines\, mobilization and exercise are important components of shoulder pain management. Too often clinicians are ready to perform joint manipu-lation/mobilization with disregard for the soft tissue component of the stiff shoulder. Myofascial restrictions may limit shoulder mobility and function and must be addressed as part of a plan of care. When fascia becomes scarred from inflammation\, injury\, postural habits or disease\, its tension adversely impacts functional mobility and physical activity. Manual therapy may include myofascial work to release tension and pain and restore mobility and function. Identify fascial restrictions using motion testing and palpation. DESCRIPTION:Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) is defined as impaired oral intake that is not age-appropriate and is associated with medical\, nutritional\, feeding skill\, and/or psychosocial dysfunction. Food allergy is a complex immune disorder caused by specific genetic variants in combination with environmental and nutritional exposures\, that falls under the medical domain of PFD and can directly impact the nutritional\, feeding skill\, and psychosocial domains of PFD. It is estimated that 33 million Americans have food allergies. 1 in 13 children have food allergies and an estimated 40% of those children have experienced a severe reaction.Professionals working with children with PFD must be up to date on the current recommendations on the introduction of solids (for those with and without familial history of food allergy)\, have a foundational knowledge of the various types and clinical signs and how food allergies can directly impact oral motor development\, feeding skill acquisition\, and nutrition. SUMMARY:Unraveling Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a recently defined diagnostic syndrome characterized by chronic symptoms of dizziness\, unsteadiness\, and/or non- spinning vertigo. While PPPD is a recently identified disorder\, syndromes characterized by dizziness triggered by motion or visually stimulating environments have been documented in medical literature as far back as the 1870s. People with PPPD struggle with challenges in sensory weighing due to problems with readaptation following an acute vestibular episode. This significantly impacts their quality of life (QOL)\, including higher anxiety and stress levels. Greater than 50% of the individuals in this population report at least one fall per year which can result in life-changing injuries with significant impacts on functional ambulation.
