SUMMARY:Empowering Handwriting Proficiency - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:With the explosion of technology in the classroom\, it was predicted students participating in handwriting-based activities would become obsolete. However\, handwriting continues to be essential to a child’s ability to participate in their school/academic environment. More than half of the preschool Common Core standards address handwriting (Tortorelli et al. 2021). It is also concerning that even neuro- typical children have shown reduced motor proficiency (Benda et al. 2021). Based on the evidence\, the influence of environmental factors and societal differences in how children play can influence the development of the underlying components (cognitive\, sensory\, motor\, visual-motor\, and visual perceptual skills) needed to attain proficient handwriting. Clinicians who work with children in a variety of settings are equipped to support and facilitate handwriting development and confidence. This course will provide the latest evidence-based approaches and strategies to address handwriting. Additionally\, it will provide hands-on strategies to evaluate and develop interventions that can have a profound functional impact within their practice setting. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients 5-11 years old. \nHighlights\n\nImpactful strategies to influence improved dexterity skills using approaches based on neuroplasticity\nEffective\, evidence-based interventions to address handwriting confidence and performance

SUMMARY:# 306 CAN-EAT Approach …Using medical\, motor\, & therapy strategies in pedia - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric feeding and swallowing problems that effect infants and children may be complex and often involve a combination of factors including issues that can make eating painful or difficult. In order to successfully remediate feeding problems\, clinicians must understand how medical and nutritional issues can contribute to feeding disorders and use a comprehensive approach to intervention. The CAN-EAT Approach© is a 2-day workshop focusing on medical\, nutritional\, and therapeutic strategies for children with pediatric feeding disorders. \n  \nThis course will allow participants to describe how pediatric feeding disorders are defined in the literature\, what the contributing factors include\, and how this relates to clinical practice. Identify primary gastrointestinal issues (gastroesophageal reflux\, constipation\, motility disorders\, eosinophilic esophagitis\, and visceral hyperalgesia) during a feeding evaluation and explain how these issues affect a child’s feeding skill development and ability to progress. Participants will analyze a child’s oral motor function and apply the knowledge in treatment making recommendations for appropriate diet\, utensil use\, and development of a therapy plan for skill development. Identify signs and symptoms of pharyngeal dysphagia or risk for pharyngeal dysphagia in a child and make appropriate recommendations for further assessment or treatment. Analyze moderate and complex pediatric feeding cases identifying barriers to feeding progression and apply principles to prioritize treatment strategies and write appropriate goals. Describe and apply examples of therapeutic techniques to reduce gagging\, improve liquid and food acceptance\, improve chewing skill\, and wean from a feeding tube. \n  \nIn the CAN-EAT Approach© “CAN” stands for comfort and nutrition which come first. Day one will focus on strategies to build GI comfort and good growth as well as explore other medical issues that interfere with feeding progression. Day two will focus on therapeutic strategies from a variety of philosophies. “EA” represents establishing acceptance of the spoon\, easy textures or mealtime routine. Then “T” stands for therapy for skill development and feeding progression. Therapeutic strategies for common feeding problems will be explored in depth through lecture and video demonstration. \n  \nInformation is applicable to infants and children from birth to 21 (class will discuss infants but is not focused on infant feeding issues) \n  \nInstructor: Krisi Brackett PhD\, CCC-SLP\, C/NDT

SUMMARY:Pediatric Sleep-Disordered Breathing - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is an often- overlooked cause of many functional and behavioral concerns in children and adolescents. Insufficient sleep and impaired sleep quality can interfere with speech and language development\, neurocognitive function\, craniofacial and upper airway growth\, as well as overall health and well- being. \nInsufficient sleep and impaired sleep quality can interfere with speech\, language\, neurocognitive function\, craniofacial and upper airway growth\, and development\, in addition to overall health and well-being. More than a quarter of all children may suffer from some form of SDB\, with up to 5% having the more severe subtype\, obstructive sleep apnea. Since speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are often involved early in the assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing difficulties in the pediatric population\, they are uniquely positioned to screen for sleep problems in these children and make timely referrals when appropriate. In this course\, clinicians will learn the signs and symptoms of SDB\, understand the deleterious consequences of SDB\, gain a deeper understanding of the importance of early intervention for SDB\, and be able to integrate routine SDB screenings into their assessment protocols\, incorporating evidence-based screening tools to aid in the early diagnosis and treatment of pediatric and adolescent SDB. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients ages 4-18 years old. \nHighlights\n\nExamine the detrimental impact of sleep- disordered breathing for the individuals on your caseload\nPractical assessments to begin screening for sleep-disordered breathing using evidence-based questionnaires and functional airway screening tools

SUMMARY:Cognitive Assessment of Diverse Populations - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\nOct 30\, 2024 10:30 AM in\n\n\nDescription\nProfessional organizations that train practitioners to serve children in schools have expressed a longstanding concern over ‘equitable’ and ‘nondiscriminatory’ cognitive assessment for examinees from diverse racial/ethnic/language groups. Although there is much that has been discovered to support best practices\, there are some assessment-related concepts that are poorly understood and ill-defined. In addition\, alternative assessment and/or test interpretation practices that may be popularly promoted but have serious problems/deficiencies that undermine ethical behavior/best practices. This course will review these issues in detail (as informed by relevant research) and promote future directions that align with ethical and best practices. • Your name will appear on your certificate of attendance exactly as provided in the form below. Please ensure the name submitted is accurate and free of errors. You must participate for the full 2 hours to receive your CE.

SUMMARY:#7326 Primitive Reflex Integration - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Primitive reflexes are assessed when a child is born to ensure they are present. Yet\, they are then often dismissed\, underestimating the role they play in the continued development and success of the child. However\, many children continue to have retained primitive reflexes which interfere with various aspects of their development. The term Primitive Reflex Integration is being used in a variety of fields with various approaches to treatment. These approaches often present the treatment of each primitive reflex as individual movement patterns separate from each other. This  course provides therapists with a roadmap to evaluating and treating 8-11 primitive reflexes\, with the understanding that they are linked and build upon each other. It utilizes a functional and play-based approach to allow physical and occupational therapists to integrate this new knowledge immediately into their practice. \n  \nInstructor: Janine Wiskind\, MS\, OTR/L

SUMMARY:Pediatric Toe Walking - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The incidence of toe walking is 2% in neurotypical children\, and 41% in those with developmental delays. What was thought to be just a neuromuscular issue has now been found to be related to sensory processing disorders\, especially in children with autism. Understanding the difference is critical in choosing the correct path of treatment.Treating toe walking without knowing the underlying cause can result in delayed recovery\, expensive orthotics\, orunnecessary surgery. Clinicians who can identify the root cause and triggers for toe walking are better able to minimize this often painful and long-term condition. \nThis course will use evidence-based practice and effective teaching methods to give learners hands-on strategies to incorporate into their practice setting. Learners will be able to explain how sensory dysfunction can cause orexacerbate toe walking and create meaningful treatment plans to provide to their clients. \nHighlights\n\nDifferences between sensory and developmental toe walking\nEffective\, evidence-based treatment plans to provide functional improvement

SUMMARY:#7157 Releasing the Frozen Shoulder - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Shoulder pain is prevalent in between 2.4% and 26% of the population\, resulting in significant financial burden\, pain and loss of quality of life. According to the APTA’s Clinical Practice Guidelines\, mobilization and exercise are important components of shoulder pain management. Too often clinicians are ready to perform joint manipu-lation/mobilization with disregard for the soft tissue component of the stiff shoulder. Myofascial restrictions may limit shoulder mobility and function and must be addressed as part of a plan of care. When fascia becomes scarred from inflammation\, injury\, postural habits or disease\, its tension adversely impacts functional mobility and physical activity. Manual therapy may include myofascial work to release tension and pain and restore mobility and function. Identify fascial restrictions using motion testing and palpation. Apply specific manual and movement interventions to address mobility deficits\, improve circulation\, and decrease pain in people presenting with shoulder pain and mobility deficits to achieve improved functional outcomes. \n  \nInstructor: Theresa A. SUMMARY:Unraveling Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a recently defined diagnostic syndrome characterized by chronic symptoms of dizziness\, unsteadiness\, and/or non- spinning vertigo. While PPPD is a recently identified disorder\, syndromes characterized by dizziness triggered by motion or visually stimulating environments have been documented in medical literature as far back as the 1870s. People with PPPD struggle with challenges in sensory weighing due to problems with readaptation following an acute vestibular episode. This significantly impacts their quality of life (QOL)\, including higher anxiety and stress levels. In this course\, we will understand the pathophysiology/diagnostic criteria of PPPD and will explore the effectiveness of a multimodalapproach\, incorporating selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI)\, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI)\, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)\, and vestibular therapy. \nHighlights\n\nAcquire practical treatment techniques tailored to the treatment of persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD)\nEasy-to-use assessment and outcome measures that are directly relevant to functional deficits\, underlying conditions\, and co-morbidities related to PPPD
