SUMMARY:Complex Developmental Trauma: Attachment\, Neurobiological and Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions to Heal the Traumatized Child - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:When children’s nervous systems are activated\, they’re engulfed in a flood of stress hormones\, setting off a chain reaction. \nThey experience feelings of unsafety\, overwhelm\, anger\, and disconnection\, trapping them in their “trauma brain” and hindering the development of executive functioning skills. \n“As emotions and bodies spiral out of control\, children are often mislabeled with a multitude of diagnoses—ODD\, ADHD\, anxiety. \nWe assume the behaviors are intricately connected\, rather than just isolated incidents. But what if we approached each symptom individually? \nRather than assigning diagnoses\, we’ll implement anxiety interventions to restore feelings of safety\, attachment-based approaches to alleviate feelings of loneliness associated with depression\, and sensory regulation techniques to better manage emotions activated by sensory memories.” \nJoin Dr. Christina Reese\, a leading expert in attachment and trauma therapy for children\, as she guides you through techniques to: \n\nRestore developmental milestones to support recovery from developmental delays\nHarness neuroplasticity to reshape beliefs to overcome oppositional behavior\nQuiet the hyper-vigilant nervous system to facilitate emotional wellbeing\nBring dysregulated emotions back to a balanced state to strengthen relationships with caregivers\nUnlock potential of executive skills by bringing safety and stability\nBuild treatment plans that focus on symptoms not disorders to bring healing\n\nLet’s make it our mission to unlock the limitless potential residing within every child affected by complex trauma. \nRegister now!

SUMMARY:Impact of Visual Deficits on Motor and Cognitive Development in Infants and Toddlers - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:According to the Kaiser Family Foundation\, children spend up to seven hours a day in front of a screen. Such exposure to screen time has compromised their ability to participate in movement activities to encourage normal visual\, motor\, cognitive\, and social development. The subsequent complications can include difficulty with visual processing\,and motor and cognitive development that impact the child’s ability to learn. Screen time influence\, coupled with a need to confine children in equipment\, has further influenced how children learn. This session seeks to provide ways to identify infants and toddlers at risk for developing visual deficits that can later influence the child’s motor and cognitive development. Clinicians involved with at-risk children can potentially change a child’s developmental trajectory. \nThis course will highlight ways in which practitioners who work with infants and toddlers can use visual approaches to influence motor and cognitive development. Participants will gain an appreciation for the complexity of the child’s visual development and how this sense influences motor and cognitive skills. An initial review of the visual system\, risk factors\, and available assessments will be provided; followed by a demonstration of intervention strategies. Through interactive discussion and analysis of a case example\, participants will demonstrate practical ways to influence the visual system and provide supportive home programming to families\, caregivers\, or teachers. The participants will be able to return to their clinic\, school\, or home settings with the knowledge to support their client’s visual skill development. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients ages 0- 18. \nHighlights\n\nEvidence review from over 10 articles that highlight the alarming problem associated with visual and motor development due to environmental influences on young children and unfortunate later effects related to learning\nPractical ways to address visual\, motor\, and cognitive development\nInteract with a case to develop solutions and create opportunities for carry-over in the home or school settings\nEffective\, evidence-based interventions to address visual\, motor\, and cognitive deficits

SUMMARY:Vestibular Rehab - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Nearly 40% of U.S. adults experience vertigo at least once in their lifetime. Physical and occupational therapists have a key role in the evaluation and rehabilitation for these patients who commonly have balance disorders\, impaired mobility or difficulty with activities of daily living. A therapist requires an in-depth understanding of physiology and pathophysiology of the vestibular system to help with the differential diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of individuals with vertigo\, dizziness\, motion sensitivity\, or imbalance. Therapists are often the front-line defense for patients with acute dizziness or vertigo\, and must perform appropriate screening\, examination\, and possible referrals for concerning presentations. Therapists must also understand how to appropriately prescribe interventions that are supported by evidence. \nThis 6-hour course will enhance your ability to evaluate the cause of dizziness and take appropriate next steps.Participants of this course will confidently organize and execute a full vestibular assessment\, including pinpointing the cause of dizziness as peripheral or central in origin. No matter the clinical practice setting\, participants will learn how to apply this fundamental knowledge and how to effectively communicate with patients and other members of the healthcare team. This course will also give participants the tools to treat common vestibular disorders such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)\, vestibular neuritis\, labyrinthitis or Meniere’s disease. This course is applicable both to clinicians without vestibular experience and those with vestibular experience who want to further their clinical skills or expand scope of practice. \nHighlights\n\nAccurately identify common causes of dizziness\nConfidently execute an exam to differentiate between peripheral and central dysfunction\nUtilize various outcome measures for patients with dizziness or balance disorders\nInterventions and advance a plan of care following clinical practice guidelines\nHands-on practice labs\nCause-and-effect relationship of positional changes and BPPV\nStrategies to improve your team’s multi-disciplinary response to dizzy patients

SUMMARY:Empowering Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Users - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:As speech-language pathologists\, we understand the complexity of communication and the importance of functional communication skills for any individual\, but more specifically\, for a child. Through the implementation of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)\, we can provide an immediate means of communication for children with speech/language delays and disorders. Unfortunately\, while a child may show great promise or progress in our speech sessions\, they may receive little to no carryover in their classrooms or other settings\, which can drastically impact their functionality and overall carryover of their skills.Research supports that the use of AAC in the classroom not only supports a student’s communication skills but also their academic and social skills. \nThis course is designed to provide therapists with the knowledge and skills necessary to support AAC users and increase the implementation and carryover of their device use in the classroom and school environments. Throughout this course you will learn how to provide individualized interventions and vocabulary sets\, aid in creating supportive communication environments\, and how to effectively integrate AAC into everyday activities and routines\, thus\, ensuring meaningful communication experiences for AAC users. The course emphasizes the importance of sustained carryover\, providing practical guidance on promoting consistent AAC usage across various contexts and with different communication partners. By the end of the course\, participants will demonstrate a deeper understanding of AAC principles and a toolkit of evidence-based strategies to empower AAC users\, educators\, and their communication partners. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients 3-22 years old. \nHighlights\n\nAcquire actionable strategies for immediate implementation in classrooms that benefit students\, teachers\, support staff\, families\, and caregivers\nExamine practical insights applicable to speech-language pathology practice for empowering Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) users

SUMMARY:#7381 Oral Habits- Targeting the Root Cause - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:There are several types of prolonged oral habits which can be harmful to the individual’s mouth and overall health. Such oral habits can include thumb sucking\, tongue sucking\, prolonged pacifier use\, blanket sucking\, nail biting. \nSucking is a reflex that is present during utero and should integrate by 6 months of age. Therefore sucking habits should be eliminated by this age and sucking that persists after 6 months of age should not be considered developmentally appropriate. There are several possible root causes for prolonged sucking habits. It is vital to determine why the individual is engaging in a noxious oral habit and target that underlying root cause. There are several consequences of prolonged oral habits\, which have negative impacts on the individuals dentition\, palate\, airway\, speech\, and orofacial development. \nMyofunctional therapy can support the elimination of oral habits. Myofunctional therapy helps to strengthen the orofacial muscles\, correct/eliminate oral habits\, correct the function of the tongue and facial muscles at rest\, for swallowing\, and for speaking. There are also often potential referrals necessary to providers such as the ENT\, pediatric dentist\, orthodontist\, and oral surgeon. Course instruction method includes: lecture\, case studies\, videos\, question/answer session. \n  \nInstructor: Janine Stiene-Cline MA CCC-SLP TSHH and Toni-Ann Antoniato\, MS\, CCC-SLP\, CLC

SUMMARY:Dual-Task Intervention in Complex Neurological Conditions - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Dual tasking is the capacity to perform a second task simultaneously and is incorporated into many activities of daily living (ADLs). The ability to perform gait and balance tasks requires cognition tasks of attention\, processing speed\, and memory. The deficits in central sensory integration and cognitive-motor interference (CMI) can result in both impaired postural control and performance decrement to either the motor or cognitive task performed. It is believed that motor and cognitive impairments lead to a higher incidence of falls during ADLs in the neurologically impaired population5 as well as a decline in quality of life. Traditional strengthening and coordination exercises performed during therapy may not adequately prepare the person for these complex conditions to return to community living which is steep in tasks requiring dual tasking. Dual-task training has been proven to enhance neuroplasticity and balance in neurological diseases. This course will provide evidence- based practice guidelines for the use of dual-tasking as an intervention for patients living with neurological diseases or conditions. \nHighlights\n\nExamine complex neurological conditions that impact multiple areas of the central nervous system\, brain\, and spinal cord causing varied symptoms\nApplication of evidence-based practice guidelines for the use of dual tasking as an intervention to provide neuroplasticity and recovery for people living with neurological conditions

SUMMARY:Empowering Handwriting Proficiency - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:With the explosion of technology in the classroom\, it was predicted students participating in handwriting-based activities would become obsolete. However\, handwriting continues to be essential to a child’s ability to participate in their school/academic environment. More than half of the preschool Common Core standards address handwriting (Tortorelli et al. 2021). It is also concerning that even neuro- typical children have shown reduced motor proficiency (Benda et al. 2021). Based on the evidence\, the influence of environmental factors and societal differences in how children play can influence the development of the underlying components (cognitive\, sensory\, motor\, visual-motor\, and visual perceptual skills) needed to attain proficient handwriting. Clinicians who work with children in a variety of settings are equipped to support and facilitate handwriting development and confidence. This course will provide the latest evidence-based approaches and strategies to address handwriting. Additionally\, it will provide hands-on strategies to evaluate and develop interventions that can have a profound functional impact within their practice setting. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients 5-11 years old. \nHighlights\n\nImpactful strategies to influence improved dexterity skills using approaches based on neuroplasticity\nEffective\, evidence-based interventions to address handwriting confidence and performance

SUMMARY:# 306 CAN-EAT Approach …Using medical\, motor\, & therapy strategies in pedia - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric feeding and swallowing problems that effect infants and children may be complex and often involve a combination of factors including issues that can make eating painful or difficult. In order to successfully remediate feeding problems\, clinicians must understand how medical and nutritional issues can contribute to feeding disorders and use a comprehensive approach to intervention. The CAN-EAT Approach© is a 2-day workshop focusing on medical\, nutritional\, and therapeutic strategies for children with pediatric feeding disorders. \n  \nThis course will allow participants to describe how pediatric feeding disorders are defined in the literature\, what the contributing factors include\, and how this relates to clinical practice. Identify primary gastrointestinal issues (gastroesophageal reflux\, constipation\, motility disorders\, eosinophilic esophagitis\, and visceral hyperalgesia) during a feeding evaluation and explain how these issues affect a child’s feeding skill development and ability to progress. Participants will analyze a child’s oral motor function and apply the knowledge in treatment making recommendations for appropriate diet\, utensil use\, and development of a therapy plan for skill development. Identify signs and symptoms of pharyngeal dysphagia or risk for pharyngeal dysphagia in a child and make appropriate recommendations for further assessment or treatment. Analyze moderate and complex pediatric feeding cases identifying barriers to feeding progression and apply principles to prioritize treatment strategies and write appropriate goals. Describe and apply examples of therapeutic techniques to reduce gagging\, improve liquid and food acceptance\, improve chewing skill\, and wean from a feeding tube. \n  \nIn the CAN-EAT Approach© “CAN” stands for comfort and nutrition which come first. Day one will focus on strategies to build GI comfort and good growth as well as explore other medical issues that interfere with feeding progression. Day two will focus on therapeutic strategies from a variety of philosophies. “EA” represents establishing acceptance of the spoon\, easy textures or mealtime routine. Then “T” stands for therapy for skill development and feeding progression. Therapeutic strategies for common feeding problems will be explored in depth through lecture and video demonstration. \n  \nInformation is applicable to infants and children from birth to 21 (class will discuss infants but is not focused on infant feeding issues) \n  \nInstructor: Krisi Brackett PhD\, CCC-SLP\, C/NDT

SUMMARY:Pediatric Sleep-Disordered Breathing - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is an often- overlooked cause of many functional and behavioral concerns in children and adolescents. Insufficient sleep and impaired sleep quality can interfere with speech and language development\, neurocognitive function\, craniofacial and upper airway growth\, as well as overall health and well- being. \nInsufficient sleep and impaired sleep quality can interfere with speech\, language\, neurocognitive function\, craniofacial and upper airway growth\, and development\, in addition to overall health and well-being. More than a quarter of all children may suffer from some form of SDB\, with up to 5% having the more severe subtype\, obstructive sleep apnea. Since speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are often involved early in the assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing difficulties in the pediatric population\, they are uniquely positioned to screen for sleep problems in these children and make timely referrals when appropriate. In this course\, clinicians will learn the signs and symptoms of SDB\, understand the deleterious consequences of SDB\, gain a deeper understanding of the importance of early intervention for SDB\, and be able to integrate routine SDB screenings into their assessment protocols\, incorporating evidence-based screening tools to aid in the early diagnosis and treatment of pediatric and adolescent SDB. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients ages 4-18 years old. \nHighlights\n\nExamine the detrimental impact of sleep- disordered breathing for the individuals on your caseload\nPractical assessments to begin screening for sleep-disordered breathing using evidence-based questionnaires and functional airway screening tools
