SUMMARY:Lymphedema & Complete Decongestive Therapy: What Every Clinician Needs to Know
DESCRIPTION:Lymphedema requires patients to commit to their well-being full time\, but when the process becomes too difficult\, self-care routines tend to fall away. This puts patients at risk of exacerbation\, infection\, and more. Over time\, other health issues arise until suddenly they need assistance with maintaining their routines. \nNot every therapist wants to be certified in Complete Decongestive Therapy\, but every health care provider needs to know the basics\, when and how to help\, and when to refer out. In this hands-on seminar\, you’ll learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of lymphedema and explore complete decongestive therapy treatment plans\, including assessment\, massage\, skin care\, compression\, exercise\, and patient education. Exercise is an integral part of self-care\, and this seminar will prepare you classic decongestion exercises as well as a routine called 4 Minute Fitness™\, which makes this process more fun and can be used with other patient populations as well. Combining over 30 years of clinical practice and the latest research\, Barbara Ingram-Rice\, OT\, LMT\, CLT\, CHC\, provides a firm foundation for working with lymphedema patients along with invaluable pearls from her time in the field.

SUMMARY:Suspected Apraxia & Early Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Being able to effectively communicate is how young children interact\, socialize\, and learn. There is cause for concern when a young child has strong cognitive and receptive language skills\, but is essentially non-verbal. It is important for therapists to be able to differentially diagnose an expressive language delay from suspected Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Therapy for a toddler with suspected CAS should have a set of unique parameters that will facilitate the development of motor planning skills. Because children with suspected CAS often progress slowly and demonstrate highly inconsistent verbal productions\, it can be difficult to measure progress and documentation can be a challenge. Caregiver involvement is a critical component of early intervention services and each family needs to be provided with functional strategies that can be embedded into their daily routines to help their child become an effective verbal communicator. \nThis one-day seminar is packed full of clinically relevant ideas and activities to fine-tune therapy sessions for young children with suspected CAS. After attending this course you will look at your caseload in a whole new light and be able to pinpoint which children are in need of more specialized programming. Therapists will gain hands-on knowledge of ways to modify existing therapy materials designed for older kids with CAS to make them fun and functional for use with toddlers. From assessment\, to therapy materials\, to documentation standards\, participants will discover ways to create the best therapy model for toddlers on their caseload with suspected Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

SUMMARY:Anxiety Disorders in Children & Adolescents: Recognizing & Treating the Emerging Epidemic - Tucson
DESCRIPTION:The increasing rate of stress and trauma to children\, which includes divorce\, family breakdown\, violence in society\, the media\, and a failing school system\, has produced a “shell shocked” generation suffering from anxiety in many cases. The challenge for clinicians is to recognize anxiety in children and help them cope. \nDr. Christine Dargon will teach you how and why anxiety develops in children and adolescents. She will present practical treatment strategies that can be applied immediately. The seven key anxiety disorders along with case examples to be addressed include: \n\nSeparation anxiety disorder\nPanic disorder\nOveranxious disorder\nObsessive-compulsive disorder\nSocial anxiety disorder\nPhobias\nPost-traumatic stress disorder\n\nOther co-occurring disorders (e.g. behavior problems\, medical conditions\, depression\, ADHD\, learning disabilities\, selective mutism) will also be discussed. Emphasis will be on creative interventions involving insight-oriented\, cognitive-behavioral\, biological\, mindfulness\, expressive arts\, and family systems approaches.

SUMMARY:Early Dementia Predictors\, Assessments\, & Interventions: Maximize Therapeutic Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:By the year 2030 it is predicted that 20% of the population will be age 65 or older\, and the number of people suffering from dementia worldwide is expected to hit 76 million. There is a natural tendency for elderly individuals to become increasingly isolated and lose interest in daily activities. Some become more indecisive and lose the ability to concentrate\, causing psychomotor agitation and insomnia\, which leads to weight loss and decreased energy. The culmination of these symptoms is depression\, which is extremely common in preclinical Alzheimer’s disease and often a predictor that dementia may be on its way. These changes are so subtle that family members and caregivers often do not see the impact until it is beyond the stages of early dementia. \nIn this course attendees discover the important predictors of dementia and distinguish between the various types. Explore effective intervention strategies for each stage of dementia and identify proper depression screening tools. Caregiver education strategies will be provided and you will leave with multiple prevention and intervention approaches to implement in clinical practice immediately.
