SUMMARY:Children with Severe Impairments - Livestream
DESCRIPTION:Treating children with severe physical impairments\, with or without cognitive impairments\, presents unique challenges. Many of these children lack head and trunk control necessary to interact with family members\, peers\, and the environment. Finding effective evaluation tools\, including standardized tests\, is difficult. Therapists gaining this information will not only be able to better their outcomes\, they will be able to carry this information on to family and caregivers to improve long-term functional development. \nThis course emphasizes evaluation and assessment across the lifespan to meet changing impairments and functional needs. Treatment techniques to address the respiratory system\, basic life skills and maintaining postural alignment will be practiced. We will discuss how to set functional goals and workable home programs. This course is designed for physical\, occupational and speech-language pathologists who work with this population and want to expand their skills. Participants will identify the challenges of working in various settings and how to set treatment priorities for each setting. Participants will apply realistic functional goal setting techniques to make goals achievable. Treatment concepts will be reinforced through practical demonstrations and interactive lab exercises. Participants\, whether attending virtually or in person\, will have access to visual demonstrations using a doll\, ensuring all can engage with and apply the concepts. \nHighlights\n\nEffective assessment and treatment of children with medically complex diagnoses such as cerebral palsy\, autism\, brain injury\, prematurity\, heart/lung failure\, seizures\, and neuromuscular degenerative diseases\nHands-on treatment strategies for development to improve function\, posture and mobility using handling\, positioning\, bracing and weight bearing activities\nUsing sensory stimulation strategies to promote improvements in vestibular input\, tactile\, audio\, visual\, proprioception\, and oral motor development\nBest practices for the evaluation and testing process to set the most functional and achievable goals\nHome programs and parent/caregiver resources to promote long-term developmental outcomes

SUMMARY:Emergent Literacy - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Nationally only 35% of public school students are reading at or above grade level. Literacy starts at birth as the parts of our brain that process language are the same ones that are repurposed to learn to read. Research has found that supporting children through early intervention when brain plasticity is highest can provide the foundation for learning to read before children enter kindergarten. Many parents need extra support in learning how to read to their children in ways that promote motivation and learning. Attendees will learn evidence-based strategies to add to their therapy toolbox and recommended books with which to implement these strategies. \nHighlights\n\nDiscover strategies to support the building blocks of emergent literacy including phonological awareness\, print knowledge\, vocabulary\, and comprehension\nReview the research on the connection between language disorders in early childhood and literacy outcomes in school\nDescribe how to choose the best books to promote emergent literacy

SUMMARY:Adaptive Strengthening Activities for Children with Motor Dysfunction Live Stream
DESCRIPTION:Strengthening is a key component of functional movement which is generally decreased in children with neuro muscular deficits. Follow through and practice of strengthening activities can be fun and creative. This encourages children to perform these activities on a regular basis to form lifelong habits to improve and maintain function. This course will examine why children with neuro muscular issues may develop alternate movement patterns due to decreased strength. Participants will also apply adaptive alternatives to traditional strengthening techniques that can be done either individually or in a group setting using both open and closed chain activities. These adaptations will include Pilates\, Yoga\, traditional exercise\, and the therapy ball for simple exercise routines that are fun and motivating. Participants will be able to immediately incorporate the activities presented and discussed into daily treatment sessions. \nHighlights\n\nBest practices for strengthening in children with neuro muscular dysfunction\nImmediately apply adapted strengthening activities for gross and fine motor deficits
