SUMMARY:The Pediatric Diabetic Patient - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The number of children diagnosed with type 1 (T1) diabetes is on a steep rise in numbers (Gale\, 2002). T1 diabetes is the number one diagnosed chronic condition for children with an estimated 50 million children diagnosed in the United States by 2050 (Center for Disease Control\, 2020 & Russell\, et al.\, 2020). Right now\, approximately one out of every 400 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes\, which makes it a fairly common disease. The other main form of diabetes\, type 2\, is also becoming more common in children\, and is likely related to increased body weight. (Osinpoff\, 2022\, para 2). Children with T1 and type 2 (T2) diabetes are affected in participation and management of all pediatric occupations\, as well as health and wellness. Beyond the occupations impacted by diabetes; psychosocial well-being is a significant concern among youth with diabetes. It is common for youth with diabetes to struggle with depression\, eating disorders\, and reoccurring hyperglycemic episodes (Lah Tomulic\, et al.\, 2022). Diabetes is a condition that not only impacts the quality of life of the patient\, but also the parents and other family members. A positive family environment with communication and co-management of the condition is the best practice for positive outcomes and prognosis of diabetes (Blonde\, et al.\, 2022; Kearney\, et al.\, 2022; Trojanowksi\, et al.\, 2021). Rehabilitation professionals are key practitioners to help children diagnosed with diabetes and their families to holistically manage the condition and improve health and wellness through increased access and participation in daily occupations. \nThe content of this program is germane to children\, students and clients ages 18 months-18 years old. \nHighlights\n\nImmediately improve your holistic assessment of all eight pediatric occupations and the impact of diabetes\nEffective evidence-based strategies for occupational engagement addressing quality of life outcomes through psychosocial and physical health and well-being for the pediatric patient with diabetes
