SUMMARY:Smart But Scattered: Executive Dysfunction at Home and at School - Live Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Children who have deficient executive skills often have trouble getting started on tasks\, get distracted easily\, lose papers or assignments and forget to hand in homework. They make careless mistakes\, put off work until the last minute and have no sense of time urgency. Workspaces are disorganized and teachers often refer to their backpacks or lockers as “black holes.” Often considered chronic underachievers\, these children are at risk for academic failure as well as emotional and behavioral difficulties. \nDr. Dawson\, co-author of the best-selling books Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents\, 3rd Ed. (2018)\, Smart but Scattered (Guilford\, 2009) and Smart but Scattered Teens (2013\, Guilford) uses case examples along with interactive discussion to demonstrate how the executive skills manifest in daily home and school activities. Learn how to assess these skills and take home evidence-based strategies to help children and adolescents overcome executive skills weaknesses. \nLeave this seminar with a set of tools that includes strategies for task/environmental modifications\, skill development through cognitive/behavioral techniques and creation of incentive systems. You will be able to give teachers and parents a means for developing and improving the following: \n\nOrganization\nTime management\nImpulse control\nGoal-directed persistence\nExecutive skills critical for independent functioning

SUMMARY:Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:According to recent data published in Gastrointestinal Disorders\, feeding disorders occur in up to 45% of the general pediatric population and up to 80% of children with developmental disabilities and complex medical conditions. The etiology of these disorders is often as varied as the clinical experiences and knowledge of the professionals who are providing treatment. Therefore\, when working with children who are experiencing feeding and swallowing challenges\, it is essential to have an understanding and knowledge of their medical history\, etiology of the disorder\, prior and current nutritional intake\, sensory and behavioral responses\, and caregiver(s’) involvement to provide the most comprehensive assessments and treatment plans. \nThis course will discuss key deficits and risk factors that need to be identified to develop a multidisciplinary plan of care based on the principle of specificity. Sensory and motor aspects of feeding and swallowing will also be addressed in addition to other barriers to successful oral intake. Guidelines for each of these areas within a developmental framework will be presented as well and evidence-based practice patterns will be discussed to develop effective treatment protocols and to identify ongoing assessment needs. Ethical and legal considerations regarding swallowing safety\, oral feedings\, and parent/caregiver choices will also be addressed collaboratively. \nHighlights\n\nDevelop a comprehensive protocol for identifying feeding and swallowing dysfunction and risk factors in pediatric clients\nIntegrate a multidisciplinary team approach in a PT/OT/SLP practice for the treatment of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders
